Elon Musk has said he would make cars for people to rent on demand if his vision of the future came true.
Speaking to the Financial Times, the Tesla boss said he is “going to make cars” for people if it comes to the right time.
“I think people are getting ready for a future where they don’t have to drive anymore and they can actually do things they enjoy, like travel, which is kind of a dream.
If I could make cars and make them available to the general public, I would do that,” Musk said.
He added: “And if you want a car, that’s fine.
But I can’t make cars because I can make more things.”
The Tesla CEO also said he wants to make his cars available to “everyone”.
“I’m really excited about making cars,” he said.
“We have a lot of amazing technology in the car, and I really want to make the cars available.
But we also want to do it in a way that is easy to make, that is reliable, and that is cheap.”
Mr Musk said he has been in discussions with car rental companies, and has made an “appointment” for a car to be delivered to a house.
“If you want to rent a car from a car rental company, you can sign up for that and that will give you a phone number that you can call, so you can talk to the owner,” he explained.
“We have an appointment right now, and we’re going to do that.”
He said he does not know when he will be able to make all of the cars for himself, and only has one Tesla car in his fleet.
“It’s very expensive to buy a car,” he admitted.
“It’s hard to find a car.
You don’t get one for free.
So I don’t know exactly when I’m going to be able, but I think it will be sometime in the next five to 10 years.”
Mr Trump tweeted on Thursday that the US is losing “millions of jobs” because of “Tesla’s collapse”.
“We need jobs in our country!” he said, using Tesla.
The US auto industry has shed a record 5 million jobs in 2017, according to a recent report by the US Conference Board.
“When the stock market went down and Tesla was losing money, the government had a chance to come in and help Tesla by giving them tax credits, so that they could build the cars,” Mr Musk said in the interview.
“But it was all rejected.
The government had the power to give them tax credit, and the government chose to go along with the political agenda instead of helping the company.”
He added that there is “no doubt” that the government is helping Tesla because “the government has made billions of dollars from this company”.
Mr Musk has long spoken out against US President Donald Trump, who has been criticised for his alleged links to Russian intelligence agencies.
“Tesla is a Russian-owned company.
The US government has been buying up Tesla shares, and this is a very good way to make sure they do not invest in companies like Tesla,” he added.
